So, I was looking through some other forum posts about my same exact issue. I found a thread in which lot of people were experiencing the same exact issue as mine. Further down the thread, somebody mentioned their mouse causing the problem. The next post someone mentioned this,

Upon reading this, a great giant nuke of a light bulb came on in my head and I realized that the issue began occurring ever since my side mouse button began acting up. What the problem was with the mouse is that I would barely touch it and the page I was browsing would go back a page. I also experienced this in teamspeak where my microphone button was lit up even though I was not pressing the button. I pressed the button to try to turn off the open microphone I had but no luck. At that moment I muted my microphone and thought nothing of it.

I tried replicating the issue by hitting ctrl+alt+delete and canceling task manager so that I have no hang/freeze occurring at the moment. I go open up a browser, go forward a couple pages. I quickly hover my mouse over the bottom right notification icons to make sure everything still works. Then I hit the mouse button. I hover down in the bottom right and viola.the freeze occurred.

What’s the easiest way to increase the size/capacity of a DMG file?

I would like to expand or increase the size of an existing password-protected DMG file. It’s currently 100MB. How do I expand it to a larger size, say 2GB?

  1. Assuming it is a standard read-write image all you have to do is:
    open up Disk Utility (you can find it via Spotlight)
    drag & drop your DMG file into the white area on the left hand side, where your Macintosh HD is also shown
    select the DMG file and at the top click the 'Resize Image' button (or via the Menu Images > Resize)

    A Disk Image will always take up as much space as you sized it. If you make it 2GB it will take up 2 GB of space on your hard drive or flash drive. A sparse images will grow according to it's contents with the selected size being the limit.

    • It does work. I have tested that under 10.6.8, 10.7.5 as well as 10.10 Yosemite.
      Disk Utility will prompt you for the encryption password. When entered correctly it will unlock the DMG file and you are able to resize it.

      You cannot extract files bigger than 4 GB. The works well, but it does have some limitations:. Opening dmg files in windows 10.

      My guess would be that the image you tried resize was not a read-write image but a read-only or compressed Disk Image. Both are literally 'read only' and need to be converted before you can do any modification to them, regardless of any password protection.
